IRAQ – UNDER FIRE, BAGHDAD SAYS IT NEEDS DRONES, ACCELERATED F-16 DELIVERY (OCT 28/REU)

REUTERS — The Iraqi government is pushing Washington to accelerate the
planned delivery of F-16 fighter jets to combat the advances made by
Al-Qaida, Reuters reports, citing an Iraqi official.

In August, the U.S. and Iraq agreed that Washington would supply an
integrated air defense system and F-16 fighter jets worth US$2.6 billion,
with delivery set for autumn 2014.

Iraq’s Deputy National Security Adviser Safa al-Sheikh Hussein says his
    government needs the fighters now.

Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, who is scheduled to meet this week with U.S.
President Barack Obama in Washington, will ask for faster delivery, Hussein
said late last week in an interview.

The prime minister is also seeking drones to reconnoiter Iraq’s desert border
    with Syria.

“The initial response from the U.S. was positive, but it depends on the
delivery time. We want them immediately,” Hussein told the wire service.

ISRAEL – HAMAS DRONE PLOT DERAILED (OCT 28/TOI)

TIMES OF ISRAEL — Palestinian security forces say they disrupted a terrorist
cell in the West Bank that was planning to launch unmanned aerial vehicles
equipped with explosives at targets in Israel, reports the Times of Israel.

While authorities were arresting Hamas activists at the university in Hebron,
other officers said they uncovered a militant group in the advanced stages of
planning the attacks. Several suspects were arrested.

Further investigation revealed that Hamas militants had already completed
several test flights with the UAV and planned to attach explosives to it,
    said Palestinians.

Israeli defense officials confirmed the report, said the Times of Israel.
However, the IDF refused to confirm the account to the U.S.-based Long War
    Journal.

ISRAEL – ROUNDS FIRED FROM GAZA; IRON DOME MAKES INTERCEPTION (OCT 28/REU)

REUTERS — Rockets have been fired by Gaza-based militants at southern Israel, including one intercepted by an Israeli defense system, Reuters reports.

Two rockets were fired before dawn on Monday against Ashkelon, about 12 km (7 mi) north of Gaza, said military officials.

The Iron Dome rocket defense system shot down one projectile, while the other fell into the Mediterranean Sea, an Israeli military spokeswoman said.

    There were no reported casualties.

Within hours, Israel’s air force bombed two concealed rocket launchers in northern Gaza, according to the military.

On Sunday, a mortar round was fired across the border from Gaza. It caused no damage or casualties, the spokeswoman said.
